Neuhaus leads multi-year training in China
Dr. Edmund Neuhaus began the first year of a multi-year training program in cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) at the Shanghai Mental Health Center (SMHC), the largest psychiatric hospital in China. In October, Dr. Neuhaus led part 1 of a two part, intensive workshop series on the Flexible CBT Approach for depression and anxiety. Part 2 is scheduled for April 2010. According to Xu Yong, MD, Director of Continuing Education at the Shanghai MHC, this is the first large scale, intensive training program for CBT in China. The 5-day workshop had over 100 participants from 14 provinces in China. The participants were mainly clinic directors and senior therapists, most of whom have had psychodynamic training. According to Dr. Xu Yong there were not sufficient slots to accommodate the high demand for the training. It is clear that Chinese behavioral health community is eager to learn evidence-based CBT as mental health problems become more prevalent in China with greater numbers of patients seeking help. According to Dr. Neuhaus, “the workshop participants were extremely diligent and motivated to learn.” He added, “it’s also surprising how effective the teaching is despite the need for interpreters. I lectured, facilitated experiential work-groups, and even interviewed patients, and the use of interpreters did not hamper the learning at all.” And for a look to the future, Dr. Neuhaus adds, “I look forward to my ongoing collaboration with my Chinese colleagues. They have challenged me to think more clearly about how I approach treatment, and they’ve educated me about cultural differences in applying CBT in China.”
In year 2 (October 2010) Dr. Neuhaus will bring several of his colleagues from Harvard Medical School to conduct intensive workshops in OCD, Panic Disorder, and Social Anxiety, and in year 3 the topics include Borderline Personality Disorder and Eating Disorders.
